22-year-old Mickaëlle Michel is the rising star of French racing. Having ridden since she was a child, she always knew that she wanted to work with horses, and a week at the apprentice school in Marseille sparked her interest in horse racing. She joined trainers Michel Planard and later Bernard Goudot as an apprentice jockey, but in three years, she only had 35 rides.
Last year, Michel started working for Chantilly-based trainer David Smaga and teamed up with jockey-turned-agent Fred Spanu. With the backing of Smaga and Spanu, Mickaëlle Michel’s career took off quicker than anyone could have foreseen. In less than a year, Michel has ridden 70 winners.
In 2018 only, Michel has achieved several mile-stones for female riders in her country. At the beginning of this year, she became the first woman to top the French jockeys’ table and remained as the leading rider in the country for almost three months before being overtaken by Christophe Soumillon. Michel is also the first female jockey to ride a treble at a Premium race meeting in France, a feat that she has achieved twice.
