17:10 GMT on Tuesday, 4th July heralds the start of the inaugural Lady Jockeys’ Thoroughbred World Championship at Europe’s newest racecourse, Bro Park, when Svensk Galopp, in association with Benny Andersson’s Chess Racing, stages a brand new event boasting an all-star cast of international female jockeys, broadcast live by Racing UK.
Riding for their chance to claim the world title will be representatives from three continents; Asia, Australasia and Europe, including star apprentice Kei Chiong from Hong Kong and New Zealand’s leading female jockey Danielle Johnson, currently second in the New Zealand jockeys’ championship.
The European contingent comprises rising star Sammy Jo Bell (UK), Prix de Diane jockey Maryline Eon (France), Stefanie Hofer (Germany), Ana O’Brien (Ireland), Fanny Olsson (Sweden) and Scandinavian Open Championship winner Sara Slot (Denmark).
British Racing’s most successful female rider, Hayley Turner who retired from the saddle in 2015, is preparing for her Bro Park debut with a ride aboard the Michael Bell-trained Flying Sparkle at Windsor this evening, and completes the line-up.
Hopes of seeing Canadian ace Chantal Sutherland back in the saddle in Sweden were dashed at the eleventh hour when commitments closer to home forced her to miss the event.
“We are delighted to welcome nine of the best female riders from all over the world to compete at Bro Park, and wish them all the best of luck”, said Director of Racing at Svensk Galopp, Dennis Madsen.
“I would also like to extend my sincere thanks from all of us at Svensk Galopp to Benny Andersson. Without help and support from his racing and breeding operation, Chess Racing, this exciting new event wouldn’t be possible”.
Racing UK, the premier dedicated satellite horseracing channel will feature all five championship races live beginning at 17.10 GMT and concluding with the final at 20.40. Top international commentator, Mark Johnson, will provide the English commentary for Racing UK viewers on Sky channels 432 and 466, Virgin Media channel 536 and Virgin Media Ireland channel 411.
A press conference to launch the event, which will be hosted by international racing personality Derek Thompson, will be held at the Thoresta Herrgård Hotel this evening at around 18.00 local time (17.00 GMT), and will be broadcast live via the Lady Jockeys’ Thoroughbred World Championship Facebook page which can be found here.
The Lady Jockeys’ Thoroughbred World Championship will be decided on a points basis over five nine-runner races, forming part of a six-race programme. Four independent experts have assessed each race and ranked the runners 1-9 before dividing the rides into three groups – Group A (top rated category), Group B (second rated category and Group C third rated category. Each rider will be drawn to ride 1 x A, 2 x B and 2 x C rated horses over the five races, to ensure they all have equal opportunities for victory.
